2008 USAID Results Report

The United States government as a partner has supported Ecuador’s development projects and strategies since 1942.  During the last 48 years, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) cooperation has focused on education, health, environment, agriculture, and micro-enterprise, among others.

On June 18, at the “Eugenio Espejo” Convention Center in downtown Quito, USAID presented a report highlighting the results obtained through its 2001-2009 Northern Border Program.  The program is conducted within the framework of the bilateral cooperation agreement signed by the U.S. and Ecuadorian governments and executed through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and “Plan Ecuador,” respectively.  The joint program’s goal is to achieve peace, security and increased investment in the Northern Border area.

Ambassador Heather Hodges visited three projects sponsored by the United States Government through its Agency for International Development (USAID) in the provinces of Sucumbios and Orellana.  The Ambassador inaugurated a potable water system in the town of “Las Palmeras” in Orellana province.  The system is designed to satisfy the town’s present and future water demand.  She also inaugurated a newly built bridge over the Takura River.  Over 1,500 inhabitants from 10 surrounding communities will directly benefit from the bridge.  She also visited the cocoa processing company “Aroma Amazónico” which received $150,000 in support from USAID to expand its activities and create 1,900 full-time jobs.
