Jefferson Brown has been a career member of the Foreign Service since 1985. Prior to arriving in Ecuador in August of 2005, Mr. Brown served for three years as Minister Counselor for Press and Cultural Affairs in Mexico City. His other overseas assignments include tenures as Press Attaché in Paraguay, El Salvador and Portugal, and as the U.S. Cultural Attaché in Brazil, where he received the State Department’s Superior Honor Award for developing and implementing the U.S.-Brazil Partnership for Education, signed by Presidents Clinton and Cardoso in 1997.

In Washington, Mr. Brown served from 1995-97 as Executive Assistant to the Counselor of the U.S. Information Agency, the ranking career officer responsible for U.S. Government public diplomacy operations abroad. From 1999 through July of 2000, he was a senior advisor in the State Department’s Office of Policy Planning working on democracy initiatives. He spent the following two years as Director of the Washington Foreign Press Center, responsible for the coordination of U.S. Government outreach to hundreds of U.S.-based and visiting foreign correspondents.

Brown was born in Boston and raised in New Jersey. He received a BA in Modern European History from the University of Chicago.
